The Iceman of Market Street

This story is from "True Tales of American Life edited and introduced by Paul Auster"

In the early '70s, a trolley-bus driver worked for the San Francisco Municipal Railway on the #8 Market. The Market Street was major thoroughfare, so the driver picked diverse passenger. On every Friday night, there was a man who board the bus carrying a huge heavy-duty green garbage sack slung over his shoulder and the sack sounds noisy.
The man said "this is Ice." The man worked at cafeteria and it closes on weekend, so he carried back massive ice home once a week.
I've heard that like people who work at convenience store can bring some abandoned food back, but I've never heard about Ice.
